B.K.P.A.
The
British Kidney Patient Association was
founded in 1975 by Elizabeth Ward OBE after
her son Timbo was diagnosed with kidney
failure at the age of 13 years. At that time
there was no national association concerned
with the plight of Britain's kidney
patients, many of whom were struggling to
survive bitter blows to their health, pride
and finances by the need for thrice weekly
dialysis. Kidney patients young and old now
know they can turn to the BKPA for support,
advice and perhaps more importantly,
financial help and a much needed break with
their families. Sadly, Timbo died following
his third transplant but the work of the
BKPA continues and relies upon the caring
and generosity of the many members of the
public anxious and willing to give their
practical support.

Continence Foundation
Leakage from the bladder is all too common,
especially if you laugh, sneeze or exercise
("stress incontinence"). Less common is leakage
from the bowel. But other problems are:
-
needing often to hurry to
the toilet to empty your bladder
-
needing to empty your
bladder very many times a day
-
having to get up several
times a night to go
-
wetting the bed in your
sleep - can happen to people of all ages,
not only children
-
your bladder does not
empty completely
-
you need adaptations to
your home or your clothes to make going to
the toilet easier
-
you have a learning
difficulty or memory problems that affect
your ability to use the toilet
The
most important thing is that treatments are
available for all of these problems. Some people
can be completely cured, others will feel a
whole lot better.

National Kidney
Federation
The National Kidney
Federation is unique because, although there are
a large number of kidney charities, the NKF is
the only national kidney charity actually run by
Kidney Patients for Kidney Patients.
Most Renal units have a
Kidney Patient Association (KPA)
specifically attached to that unit, however, 27
years ago (1978) these independent charities
realised that they needed a national
organisation to fight their cause as renal
provision was in dire difficulties,
overstretched, and under resourced. If ever
there was a case of post code provision, renal
disease was it! Currently there are 69 KPAs and
they come together as the controlling Council of
the National Kidney Federation, the KPAs are
both the ears and the eyes of the NKF and its
controlling force. Patients are the Officers of
the NKF, the Executive Committee of the NKF and
the workforce of the NKF. Apart from six members
of staff, all other personnel are either Kidney
patients or carers of Kidney patients.
Unlike other kidney
charities, the NKF has only two roles
campaigning for improvements to renal provision
and treatment, and national patient support
services.
