Diabetes Stories
This
website presents audio recordings of the
life-stories of 50 people diagnosed with
diabetes between 1927 and 1997. They talk
with passion and humour about their daily
lives and provide a unique oral history of
what it was like to have diabetes during the
twentieth century.
Most agreed to talk about their experiences,
because they felt they’d benefited from past
research and so were glad to contribute to
future research. Their stories are offered
as a resource for historians, healthcare
professionals, people with diabetes, and all
those interested in the ways people remember
and make sense of their lives.

Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation
Type 1
diabetes in children, especially in the under
fives, has been rising at an alarming rate. JDRF
is the only organisation in the world whose
primary aim is to find a cure for type 1
diabetes and its complications. It was founded
in 1970 in the USA by a small group of parents
of children with type 1 diabetes who recognised
that insulin injections are not a cure for this
life threatening and lifelong condition.
JDRF,
affiliated to JDRF International, was founded in
the UK in 1986.
Although
their primary aim is to find a cure, they
recognise the challenge of living with type 1
diabetes. They provide information about the
progress of research to individuals and families
living with type 1 diabetes, through
publications and public
meetings.
Their regional staff and
volunteers help schools and businesses
understand diabetes and work with children and
adults with type 1 diabetes.
