Mental Health
c.a.l.m. Campaign
Against Living Miserably
The
Campaign Against Living Miserably is
targeted at young men aged between 15-35.
The campaign offers help, information and
advice via a phone and web service. Anyone,
regardless of age, gender or geographic
location can call the line.
The
campaign was launched as a pilot by the Dept
of Health in Manchester on Dec 15th 1997,
and then rolled to Merseyside, Cumbria and
later Luton & Bedfordshire. In 2004 the
Dept of Health announced the end of the
pilot. However, those involved on the
ground felt it was important the line was
continued, and c.a.l.m. the charity was
launched March 31st 2006 with ads on MTV and
posters and billboards provided by JCDecaux,
Clear Channel and Viacom across England in
April and May 2006.
Working with people from the music, sport
and club scenes, c.a.l.m. encourages young
men to 'open up' and sort out their
problems. c.a.l.m. has a strong and very
real presence through club flyers, posters,
beermats, gigs and in the media.
There are many reasons why young men need a
campaign like c.a.l.m.. Everyone has their
own life, with different interests,
circumstances, pressures and problems. But
men aren't supposed to talk about stuff, so
it can be hard to know where or who to go
for help when life gets on top of them.

Depression Alliance
Depression Alliance is the leading UK charity
for people with depression. They work to relieve
and to prevent this treatable condition by
providing information and support services to
those who are affected by it via their
publications, supporter services and network of
self-help groups for people affected by
depression.
Depression Alliance believes that the stigma and
lack of accurate information surrounding
depression continues to prevent people from
seeking and finding appropriate and vital help
when it is required. Early intervention and
information are crucial in enabling those
affected by depression to recover quickly and –
critically – in preventing further episodes.
Informed
by the experiences of people with depression and
by research, they work extensively with
government agencies and healthcare professionals
to improve the service provision for those
affected by depression. They also campaign to
raise awareness amongst the general public about
the realities of this severe and enduring
illness by organising a variety of events and
initiatives.

Hearing Voices Network
The
first UK hearing Voices group was formed in 1988
in Manchester. It was inspired by the pioneering
work of Professor Marius Romme and Sondra Escher
from Maastricht University, and a Dutch self
help group, Foundation Resonance.
Following a national conference held in London
in 1990, the Independent on Sunday newspaper
published a prominent article on the topic which
generated a lot of correspondence. As a result
we decided to establish a network of voice
hearers and individuals who were interested in
the experience of hearing voices.
In 1989
the Manchester group organised a speaking tour
in the north of England for Marius Romme and his
colleagues Sondra Escher and Anse Graf. The
meetings were well attended by people who hear
voices, their relatives, friends and carers and
interested mental health professional’s.
Since
this time the work of the Network has been well
reported in publications such as Open Mind,
journals, local and national newspapers and the
broadcasting media. Members of the group have
continued to maintain a relationship with Rome
and Escher, regularly visiting and attending
conferences in Maastricht and throughout the
world.
